Profoundly Gifted
It is important for parents to understand there are different levels of giftedness in children. And, that gifted children are screened, tested and designated in different ways. Gifts and talents may manifest as early as the toddler years, however in other children they will become evident during the school age years. One way gifted children are discovered is through the administration of a standard individual IQ test. While 115 would signify mild giftedness, anything 180 or above designates a profoundly gifted child. There are different types of tests administered according to age group.
According to various researchers only about one in one million children are profoundly gifted. How would you recognize if your child fit this category? As mentioned above, an IQ test score of 180 or higher is a clear indication of profound giftedness. You may also notice your child can read or write exceptionally well at a young age. They may also excel in other areas like math and science. Some children who are at this stage of giftedness are exceptional when it comes to artistic endeavors like drawing, painting, singing, playing instruments or even composing music.
If your child has been recognized already as profoundly gifted there are some things you can do to help nurture their special abilities while allowing them to develop normally. Gifted kids need the same interaction and socialization as the average student. For this reason many teachers will place a gifted child in a regular class but that child will also attend special talented and gifted classes. These classes, abbreviated TAG, are part of a program that helps these children socialize with other gifted youngsters while challenging themselves academically and artistically.
When you first discover your child is gifted you should conference with both their pediatrician and any teachers they may have. Guiding the profoundly gifted child should be a group effort between parents, educators and health care professionals. There are a variety of web resources and books that can help you learn more about all levels of childhood giftedness. You may also want to consider joining Mensa or another organization for individuals with high IQ scores as these groups help educate and advocate for the gifted of all ages.
