Identifying Gifted

There are various methods used for identifying gifted children. It is important to identify these children because they are the potential leaders, the very future of our world. Their gifts should be nurtured, guided and grown by the educational system. Luckily there are some simple ways to identify gifted kids. One way is with a standard IQ test, either administered in a group or individually. On a scale of scores, 100 is average, 115 is mildly gifted and 180 plus is profoundly gifted. Any score between 115 and 180 would deem your child intellectually gifted.

Gifted kids may also be talented at a certain pursuit like art, music or writing. They may display abilities far above their grade level and interact with adults as though they too are mature grown-ups. These children may be torn between their intellectual and/or artistic gifts and the desire to fit in with non-gifted peers. They may also misbehave in class or have trouble paying attention because they are bored with the curriculum.

Some highly gifted kids may also be hypersensitive. Hypersensitive children are easily bothered by loud noises, bright lights, crowds and other sensory attacks. Not every hypersensitive child is gifted. And, only a small percentage of gifted kids are hypersensitive. However it is something to think about if your child displays such tendencies. If you do suspect that your child is extremely sensitive mentally, emotionally or physically speak to their pediatrician. There are ways to help your gifted child adapt to the world and become more comfortable.

When identifying gifted children you can go through private avenues for testing. The tests will cost up to $700 and may be administered by schools or even university students. When test results come back they will be discussed with parents and an action plan for the child will be devised. Depending on the results of the test, the child may be placed in a talented and gifted program (TAG), referred to a school for the gifted or simply encouraged to challenge themselves and develop their gifts while remaining in their normal classroom. What is best for the child depends not only on their test scores but also their age, personality and preferences.
