Gifted School
While attending gifted school is not right for every child, there are some cases where it is an ideal solution. A gifted child is one who has taken a standardized test and been designated as gifted due to their test results. Testing is usually done between ages four and eight. There are different levels of giftedness based on test results, from mildly gifted to profoundly gifted. While a child with mild to moderate giftedness may thrive in a public school, a profoundly gifted child would most likely experience problems.
The profoundly gifted are those with an IQ of 180 or more. A child with an IQ of that magnitude would most likely require a school designed to teach very gifted children. One reason for this is because gifted children may become bored or restless while in traditional classrooms because they learn so quickly. The material becomes boring and the child may become disruptive or inattentive. Gifted educational facilities understand the child's needs and design the curriculum to suit those needs. The lessons may move more quickly, cover a wider variety of topics, and cover more advanced material.
The Internet is a good tool to use when first searching for a school especially for the gifted. With a search engine query you can track down the schools of this type in the U.S., Canada and around the world. Once you have a list of schools, the next step is to determine whether their location is agreeable. If so, you can contact the school for a tour and consultation. This can be done by visiting, calling or even e-mail in some cases. At the least, the site should provide location and contact information for the school and a brief introduction to what they offer.
While gifted school may not be cheap, there are ways to offset the cost. Your child may qualify for a student grant or scholarship, so make sure to research available programs. There should be a financial aid officer at the school who can help you with the financial details of school attendance. If you need help with application or admission requirements, the admissions department of the school should be able to answer any questions you may have and provide you with the information you need.
